Best Time
To Ski Japan
The short answer: mid-January to mid-February. But it depends on what you want.
"Japanuary" is real. It snows almost every day. Hokkaido gets the driest, lightest powder.
Best balance of deep snow and empty slopes. Chinese New Year week excepted.
Warmer temps, sunny days, softer snow. Kids love it. Cheaper flights and hotels.
Avoid December 25 - January 5 (New Year) and Chinese New Year (late Jan/early Feb). Lift lines triple. Prices double. Book 6 months ahead for peak season.
The Daily
Ritual
The Ride
Wake up. Check the cams. It snowed 40cm overnight. Get first tracks. Face shots all morning. Legs burning by 2pm.
The Soak
Strip down. Enter the Onsen. 42°C volcanic water heals your body while snow falls on your head. Spiritual reset.
The Feast
Find a tiny Izakaya. Order hot sake from a vending machine. Slurp spicy miso ramen. Plan tomorrow's ski day.
